    Blind recovery of k/n rate convolutional encoders in a noisy environment

To meet the new constraints of data rate or reliability, new coding schemes are currently being developed. Therefore, digital communication systems are in perpetual evolution and it is becoming very difficult to remain compatible with all standards used. A cognitive radio system seems to provide an interesting solution to this problem: the conception of an intelligent receiver able to adapt itself to a specific transmission context. This article presents a new algorithm dedicated to the blind recognition of convolutional encoders in the general k/n rate case. After a brief recall of convolutional code and dual code properties, a new iterative method dedicated to the blind estimation of convolutional encoders in a noisy context is developed. Finally, case studies are presented to illustrate the performances of our blind identification method

Cognitive radio systems permit one to solve this problem through the design of intelligent receivers. However, such receivers must be able to adapt themselves to a specific transmission context. This requires the development of new methods in order to blindly estimate error-correcting codes. Coding schemes such as turbocode, composed of convolutional codes, belong to a family of error-correcting codes in use in many standards. In most of the methods designed to identify convolutional encoders the algebraic properties are used implicitly. However usually, these dedicated properties are neither explicated, nor detailed, nor demonstrated. The study reported here investigates the algebraic properties of convolutional encoders, useful for blind recognition methods in the cognitive radio context and more specially the algebraic relationships between different forms of a convolutional code and its corresponding dual code. Moreover, some simulation results are presented to show the relevance of these properties for the blind identification of the convolutional encoder

    Joint EigenValue Decomposition for Quantum Information Theory and Processing

    The interest in quantum information processing has given rise to the development of programming languages and tools that facilitate the design and simulation of quantum circuits. However, since the quantum theory is fundamentally based on linear algebra, these high-level languages partially hide the underlying structure of quantum systems. We show that in certain cases of practical interest, keeping a handle on the matrix representation of the quantum systems is a fruitful approach because it allows the use of powerful tools of linear algebra to better understand their behavior and to better implement simulation programs. We especially focus on the Joint EigenValue Decomposition (JEVD). After giving a theoretical description of this method, which aims at finding a common basis of eigenvectors of a set of matrices, we show how it can easily be implemented on a Matrix-oriented programming language, such as Matlab (or, equivalently, Octave). Then, through two examples taken from the quantum information domain (quantum search based on a quantum walk and quantum coding), we show that JEVD is a powerful tool both for elaborating new theoretical developments and for simulation

    Modelling Statecharts and Activitycharts as Signal equations

    International audienceThe languages for modeling reactive systems are of different styles, like the imperative, state-based ones and the declarative, data-flow ones. They are adapted to different application domains. This paper, through the example of the languages Statecharts and Signal, shows a way to give a model of an imperative specification (Statecharts) in a declarative, equational one (Signal). This model constitutes a formal model of the Statemate semantics of Statecharts, upon which formal analysis techniques can be applied. Being a transformation from an imperative to a declarative structure, it involves the definition of generic models for the explicit management of state (in the case of control as well as of data). In order to obtain a structural construction of the model, a hierarchical and modular organization is proposed, including proper management and propagation of control along the hierarchy. The results presented here cover the essential features of Statecharts as well as of another language of Statemate: Activitycharts. As a translation, it makes multiformalism specification possible, and provides support for the integrated operation of the languages. The motivation lies also in the perspective of gaining access to the various formal analysis and implementation tools of the synchronous technology, using the DC exchange format, as in the Sacres programming environment

    Effects of metabolic syndrome on arterial function in different age groups: the Advanced Approach to Arterial Stiffness study

    Objective: The aim of the Advanced Approach to Arterial Stiffness study was to compare arterial stiffness measured simultaneously with two different methods in different age groups of middle-aged and older adults with or without metabolic syndrome (MetS). The specific effects of the different MetS components on arterial stiffness were also studied. Methods: This prospective, multicentre, international study included 2224 patients aged 40 years and older, 1664 with and 560 without MetS. Patients were enrolled in 32 centres from 18 European countries affiliated to the International Society of Vascular Health & Aging. Arterial stiffness was evaluated using the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) in four prespecified age groups: 40-49, 50-59, 60-74, 75-90 years. In this report, we present the baseline data of this study. Results: Both CF-PWV and CAVI increased with age, with a higher correlation coefficient for CAVI (comparison of coefficients P < 0.001). Age-adjusted and sex-adjusted values of CF-PWV and CAVI were weakly intercorrelated (r 2 = 0.06, P < 0.001). Age-adjusted and sex-adjusted values for CF-PWV but not CAVI were higher in presence of MetS (CF-PWV: 9.57 ± 0.06 vs. 8.65 ± 0.10, P < 0.001; CAVI: 8.34 ± 0.03 vs. 8.29 ± 0.04, P = 0.40; mean ± SEM; MetS vs. no MetS). The absence of an overall effect of MetS on CAVI was related to the heterogeneous effects of the components of MetS on this parameter: CAVI was positively associated with the high glycaemia and high blood pressure components, whereas lacked significant associations with the HDL and triglycerides components while exhibiting a negative association with the overweight component. In contrast, all five MetS components showed positive associations with CF-PWV. Conclusion: This large European multicentre study reveals a differential impact of MetS and age on CAVI and CF-PWV and suggests that age may have a more pronounced effect on CAVI, whereas MetS increases CF-PWV but not CAVI. This important finding may be due to heterogeneous effects of MetS components on CAVI. The clinical significance of these original results will be assessed during the longitudinal phase of the study
